UFBU, the umbrella body for bank unions, issued a statement on Friday demanding a three‑day strike across all banking institutions. The call covers every branch, ATM and customer service outlet from September 28 through 30, 2024. The federation says the move aims to pressure the government to address staff grievances over salary arrears and working conditions.
In addition to the strike, banks will observe a national holiday on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti. All institutions nationwide will close on that day, marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. This adds a fourth day of in‑person service suspension to the already disrupted week.
For customers, routine transactions like cash deposits, cheque clearances and KYC appointments will have to be postponed. A shopkeeper in Jaipur, 45, said he will delay filing loan paperwork until the bank reopens. Those who need in‑branch assistance must plan ahead, as the strike will halt all physical operations.
However, digital banking will keep functioning. Net banking, UPI, mobile apps and ATMs will remain operational, allowing customers to initiate transfers, pay bills and withdraw cash. The RBI says the holiday calendar will be updated on its website for the public to check state‑specific closures.
Customers are urged to consult the RBI’s state‑wise holiday list before heading to a branch. The federation also encourages the use of online channels to avoid inconvenience. The strike is set to conclude on September 30, after which banks will resume normal operations.
