In a high‑speed collision on the Purvanchal Expressway, five vehicles trailing Rahul Gandhi’s convoy slammed into an ambulance near Haliyapur, 100 km from Lucknow, according to police.
CCTV footage shows the ambulance in the right‑hand lane, with a Scorpio SUV’s hood mangled as it stopped ahead after impact, while party workers and security staff piled into the wreckage.
Gandhi, who landed at Lucknow airport earlier today, was en route to Sultanpur, 135 km away, where he is due before a special MP‑MLA court on a defamation case tied to remarks about BJP chief Amit Shah.
The case, first filed on 4 Aug 2018 by BJP leader Vijay Mishra over comments made during a Bengaluru rally, has been pending as Gandhi’s presence is required for the judgment’s pronouncement.
Police are treating the injuries as non‑fatal, and the court has scheduled the verdict for later today, leaving the political fallout to unfold as the convoy’s driver is questioned.
