PCI slammed the police action, calling it a ‘serious attack on press freedom’ and demanded the warrants be withdrawn. The complaint cites Rina’s track record of reporting on environmental, political and governance issues in the state, and highlights her frequent voice in the debate over the Siang dam.
Police said 26 people were apprehended during the October 23 bandh, including five juveniles. Eight criminal cases were registered, and six persons were detained for questioning. Among those detained are anti‑dam activist Ebo Mili and youth leader Otul Jerang, two who surrendered. The police also named four individuals for questioning: Sadin Modi, Kalem Perme, Milo Pertin and Kangkiling Megu.
The bandh, called across Siang, Upper Siang and parts of East Siang districts, aimed to demand the release of activists arrested in earlier demonstrations. Tensions flared after security forces reportedly used tear gas at Dite Dime near Geku. The clash left four women hospitalized briefly and led to the burning of the NHPC office and vandalism of political houses.
No statement has been issued by the Arunachal Pradesh Police or SP Pankaj Lamba regarding the warrants or the PCI’s complaint. The club has issued a call for an immediate review of the police’s conduct at the next district council meeting.
If the police fail to comply, the PCI plans to file a formal complaint with the state human rights commission and seek a court order to safeguard journalists.
