Anant Kumar Singh, a JD(U) MLA from Mokama, told reporters at his home on Friday that he masterminded nine murders for former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The claim rattled the party, which issued a statement by spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad saying the allegation was baseless and could not be taken seriously. Prasad emphasized that Nitish Kumar has maintained an unblemished record throughout his five-decade career.
Singh’s accusation came amid a bitter rivalry with JD(U)’s choice for the upcoming legislative council polls, Neeraj Kumar, whom Singh has vowed to defeat. He also said he supported Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh, but insisted this did not amount to defying Nitish Kumar. The MLA saw his support for the rival candidate as a betrayal that prompted the explosive claim.
Nitish Kumar, who took over the reins of Bihar in 2005, is widely credited with restoring rule of law and curbing crime, earning a reputation for clean governance. His record includes a 40% drop in per capita crime rates during his tenure. The spokesperson’s defense of Kumar highlights the stark contrast between the alleged murders and his record.
The JD(U) will release a formal statement next week to address the claim and reaffirm its commitment to Nitish Kumar’s legacy. Singh’s supporters have called for an internal inquiry into the allegations.
