The shooting erupted at about 9 pm in the Bora Service area off GS Road, where a .32‑bore pistol fired by Gogoi struck six people tied to the hotel’s ownership.
Four of the dead were members of the same family, including Helena Bharali, Deborshi Kashyap and Narayan Das; the fifth victim was a village associate. Survivor Satyen Pathak, a hotel employee, was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and is now stable.
Police say the shooting stemmed from a dispute over the hotel’s lease agreement; Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta stated that Gogoi allegedly threatened to terminate the lease and retaliated violently.
State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi slammed the incident as a "cold‑blooded murder" and demanded a thorough inquiry, urging the state government to address rising crime in Guwahati.
The investigation is proceeding under the charge of the Guwahati Police, with a forensic lab slated to examine the pistol and a court expected to order a detailed inquiry before any charges are filed.
Families of the victims, including the parents of two children who lost their parents, are coping with the tragedy while community leaders call for tighter security at public venues.
