Chennai logged 15.78 cm of Northeast Monsoon rain on Saturday night, the first of its kind for the city. In response, the Tamil Nadu government established 220 relief camps and 110 community kitchens to aid residents. The move follows the Regional Meteorological Centre’s forecast of very heavy rainfall on Oct 18.
The RMC attributed the downpour to organized convective activity linked to cyclonic circulation rather than a local cloudburst. Municipal pumps were rolled out across 100 low‑lying areas that flooded overnight, draining water and cutting the number of inundated pockets to seven by morning.
Minister Aadhav Arjuna, Municipal Administration Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, and Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Sameeran inspected the damage. Four State Disaster Response Force teams and one National Disaster Response Force unit have been placed on standby.
A resident in a low‑lying area woke to submerged streets and now depends on the community kitchen to feed their children. City workers say the overnight pumping efforts have dramatically reduced the extent of waterlogged zones.
Officials will monitor tomorrow’s forecasted rainfall and deploy additional pumps if necessary, while the IMD warns of isolated heavy rains on Oct 18‑19.
