In a decisive move on Wednesday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed the Maheshwar Municipal Officer’s March 31 order that had shifted Monalisa Bhosle’s birth certificate from 1 January 2008 to 30 December 2009, a change that would have left the 17‑year‑old Kumbh‑era street vendor legally a minor when she married actor Farman Khan on March 11 2025.
The petition, lodged by Bhosle’s father, relied on a community health centre register that recorded her birth on 30 December 2009, arguing that the later certificate, issued after a May 2025 affidavit, misrepresented her age. He claimed the earlier date was a clerical error.
Justice Gajendra Singh warned that altering a birth date can ripple through a citizen’s rights, noting impacts on voting rights, contractual capacity and the criminal liability of her spouse. He highlighted that Bhosle’s Aadhaar and voter ID already reflected the 2008 date.
The court declined to determine the correct date, instead directing the authorities to reopen the father’s application only after Bhosle is heard in person, a move that keeps the marriage’s validity in limbo and underscores the necessity of audi‑alteram‑partem in civil record changes.
