Rahul Gandhi called out the Election Commission on Friday, demanding to know who ordered Tata Consultancy Services to alter the online Form 6 used for new voter registrations, after an investigative report by The Indian Express surfaced.
An investigative report by The Indian Express revealed that the Election Commission’s own commissioners had raised objections to a recently added declaration on the online Form 6, prompting Rahul Gandhi to demand accountability.
The declaration, attached as Annexure-D during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, asked applicants to confirm whether their name or that of a parent or grandparent appeared on the previous SIR electoral roll.
The Election Commission clarified that the statutory Form 6 had not been amended, only the annexure added, and that the power to attach the declaration was upheld by the Supreme Court in a May 27 judgment.
On September 30, the poll body removed the declaration from the ECINET portal in 13 states where the SIR exercise had concluded, while it remains active in states still under revision.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge announced a nationwide "Save Democracy March" from October 2 to 8, and opposition MPs plan to march to the Election Commission on October 6.
In Delhi, a 45‑year‑old resident, Meera Sharma, said the changes had made her registration process confusing, and the Commission has scheduled a panel hearing on October 6 to examine the allegations.
