The gunman, identified as a 16‑year‑old student, burst into a classroom with a concealed weapon. Albert Palencia, mayor of Banga, said the suspect was a known joker who had told classmates he would act after lunch.
Palencia recounted that the youth began firing after lunch, striking ten pupils before turning the gun on himself. Eight others were injured, four in critical condition, all aged between 14 and 17.
South Cotabato's governor, Reynaldo Tamayo, urged parents to keep firearms out of reach and called for a nationwide crackdown on illegal guns. He noted that despite strict licensing, illegal weapons circulate, making schools vulnerable.
Tamayo announced a cabinet meeting to review gun‑storage policies and will push for new legislation before the next legislative session. The governor also pledged to work with local police to secure school premises.
