In a post on its official Facebook page, Punjab Police said today that the advisory that had been circulating among border‑district officers is a fabrication.
The document, purportedly issued by the Border Range, had been addressed to police units in Amritsar Rural, Batala, Gurdaspur and Pathankot, warning officers to avoid wearing uniforms while travelling between home and duty.
BJP leader Sunil Jakhar had earlier claimed the memo urged officers to travel alone, wear civilian clothes and use public transport, linking it to the killing of Assistant Sub‑Inspector Harjit Singh.
SAD chief Bikram Singh Majithia disputed the police's claim, pointing to the dispatch number on the memo and calling for an independent probe.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema slammed the allegations as political propaganda, accusing the opposition of spreading a false narrative and demanding action against those spreading the claim.
The police have urged all officers to rely only on official channels for instructions, while the opposition is pressing for an investigation; a probe is expected to be announced within the coming week.
