The 17 students were hauled into Patiala House Court in Delhi after a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police had filed an FIR at Parliament Street station alleging unlawful assembly, obstruction of public space, and damage to property.
The judge, Animesh Kumar, described the accusations as "serious" yet noted the accused were not habitual offenders, citing their youth and potential career impact.
In four separate orders between 9:00 and 9:25 pm, the magistrate granted bail on a personal bond with a surety of equal amount, subject to strict conditions.
Those conditions include furnishing correct permanent and residential addresses, maintaining active mobile numbers, appearing before the court on every hearing date, and a prohibition on tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses. The students may not leave the country without the court’s prior permission.
The Delhi Police had sought 14‑day judicial custody, arguing the accused could commit further offences or interfere with the investigation. The court, however, refused custody and ordered the DCP to report on alleged custodial torture.
Compliance will be monitored in forthcoming sessions; any breach of the bail conditions could lead to immediate revocation and a return to custody.
