Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, was released from Delhi Police preventive arrest on Sunday after a Saturday detainment linked to a planned protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The release followed Dipke’s announcement that he would return to his village in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district after his 85‑year‑old grandmother, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke, died on Saturday. Vilas Dipke, Abhijeet’s uncle, said the family had appealed to police at least ten times, demanding permission to attend the funeral, which was held on Sunday morning.
Delhi Police posted on X that they had informed Dipke of his grandmother’s death and offered all possible assistance to facilitate his travel to Hingoli on humanitarian grounds, but he declined the offer. The police maintained that the founder was promptly notified of the funeral timings.
Dipke was among three CJP leaders—along with Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka—detained inside an aircraft on Saturday and later produced before an executive magistrate. The release came with a condition that the trio would not breach peace for a year, a clause the party has publicly rejected while calling the protest a “rebellion against dictatorship.” The next phase of the movement is set for October 10, when the CJP plans to stage a mass demonstration in Delhi.
