The Delhi Cabinet, convened on Wednesday under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned a ₹1,790.52‑crore investment in the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) to overhaul the capital’s congested roads. The decision follows a series of consultations with the Delhi Police and transport experts, who highlighted the city’s escalating traffic woes.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters that the AI‑driven platform will harness real‑time traffic data, adaptive signal controls and automated enforcement to make travel safer and smoother. He added that the initiative aligns with central and local government priorities to modernise urban mobility.
The ITMS rollout will span 42 identified corridors, executed in three phases over a 24‑month period. After initial deployment, Delhi Police will manage and maintain the system for five years, ensuring consistent performance and rapid response to traffic incidents.
Commuters on the busiest routes, such as the Delhi‑Noida Expressway, expect fewer bottlenecks, while traffic officers anticipate reduced manual enforcement workload. The automated signals are projected to cut average travel time by up to 15% during peak hours.
The next step is the formal handover of the project to Delhi Police’s Traffic Command, which will begin phase‑one implementation at the end of this month. Officials say a public awareness campaign will launch alongside the system to guide drivers on new signal timings and enforcement protocols.
