Bittu, a former Union Minister and grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, had earlier accused the AAP‑led state government of hurling eggs and tomatoes at his convoy on Friday en route to the Nasha‑Mukt Punjab Yatra in Pathankot. He returned the items in a symbolic act of protest and declared that his party would continue to voice grievances against the Punjab government.
Punjab Police, citing an incident report, said Bittu was detained for attempting to throw eggs and tomatoes at the CM’s convoy. The police spokesperson added that the action was a "public safety breach" and that the suspect was taken into custody for questioning.
Bittu warned that the CM Bhagwant Mann and the state DGP would be held accountable if he or his entourage suffered any harm. He tweeted, "If AAP workers protest against BJP leaders, BJP workers will protest against the Punjab government," signalling a potential escalation of political friction.
The leader has brought the incident to the notice of the Union Home Ministry, and a police inquiry is underway. An initial hearing is expected to take place early next week, with the possibility of legal action against Bittu if the authorities find evidence of intent to damage state property.
