On Oct. 6, 2026, in Thimphu, DGPC and Adani Power inked a shareholders agreement for the Chamkharchhu‑I hydropower plant.
The 770‑MW project, set to be built under a build‑own‑operate‑transfer model, will sit on the Mangdechhu River and tap the river's 3,600‑kW flow to generate clean electricity.
DGPC currently manages 2,471 MW of installed capacity and aims to add 5,500 MW over the next five years through new hydropower and solar ventures, bolstering year‑round supply.
Bhutan has exported 80% of its hydro surplus to India, generating ₹4,200 crore in revenue; the new plant will further cement this economic lifeline.
Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said the deal will strengthen winter energy security and support the country's carbon‑negative goals.
Adani Power's Managing Director Anil Sardana added that the collaboration will accelerate South Asia's transition to renewable energy, with construction slated to begin in early 2027 and completion by 2030.
