Delhi lawyers will strike on Tuesday, October 27, shutting all district courts after police threatened advocates. The Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations of Delhi said the protest was a response to alleged police intimidation. The decision follows an incident at Shahdara police station where a senior officer allegedly brandished a revolver.
Advocates had approached the station to seek action in an assault case that left a fellow lawyer injured. The officer reportedly threatened the lawyers, prompting the bar committee to call for immediate suspension of both the officer and the station house officer.
The committee also demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident, citing concerns over police misconduct. The strike is set for just one day, a move aimed at forcing a swift response.
One lawyer, who had filed the complaint, said the intimidation forced him to cancel a court appearance, jeopardizing his client's case. The client, a migrant worker, fears that the police’s actions could derail his legal rights.
The strike will pressure Delhi Police to act on the committee’s demands, with authorities expected to announce a suspension or inquiry within 48 hours.
