IT Secretary S. Krishnan announced at a New Delhi event that the country already has the capacity to manufacture enough smartphone screen protectors to satisfy domestic demand. The remark follows the government’s decision to bring the product under mandatory quality standards.
By April 1, 2027, all screen protectors sold in India will need to meet the Indian Standard under a compulsory registration framework. Manufacturers covered by the rule have a one‑month window, until March 31, 2027, to prepare for compliance. The move is framed as a public‑interest safeguard against substandard imports.
Industry analysts warn that the impact on retail prices and import volumes remains uncertain. While the policy could boost the market share of local producers, it may also drive up costs for consumers if domestic manufacturers lack economies of scale.
Krishnan highlighted a shift in investment sentiment across electronics and semiconductors. He said last year’s fear‑of‑missing‑out (FOMO) is turning into tangible commitments, with companies already in talks about new plants and expansion plans.
The next step for manufacturers is to submit conformity evidence by the March 31 deadline. The Ministry will audit compliance, and any non‑compliant products will face penalties once the April 1 regime kicks in.
