The reason? Their details were flagged as “unmapped” against the last Special Intensive Revision conducted in Delhi back in 2002. A two-decade-old administrative lag. Now, it’s resolved.
The Election Commission’s instructions are strict about who gets flagged. Members of the judiciary, public representatives, and prominent figures in arts, culture, and journalism must have their details verified if they miss the draft roll published on August 31. In Delhi’s case, the numbers are staggering. More than 97 lakh voters are on the draft list, but 33.13 lakh have been identified for notices over discrepancies. Most of these cases involve voters whose records simply couldn’t be matched with the 2002 data. The system caught them, and the process kicked in.
The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office has been quick to clarify the stakes. Receiving a notice doesn’t mean a name gets deleted. It means the voter has to prove their existence. Officials emphasized that no name can vanish without a speaking order and an opportunity to appeal. For voters like Rekha Gupta, registered in the New Delhi Assembly constituency, the verification was a formality. She submitted the documents. Her name is now reserved. The bureaucracy did its job, however clunky the 2002 baseline was.
Now, the clock ticks toward November 4. That’s when the final electoral roll goes public. For the 33.13 lakh flagged voters, that date is the deadline to ensure their democratic right isn’t lost to a database mismatch. The field teams have cleared the VIPs. The remaining 97 lakh+ voters on the draft list are already in. For Advani, Dhankhar, and Kejriwal, the issue is closed. The paperwork is signed. The next step is just waiting for the official gazette to drop.
