On Monday, the Enforcement Directorate transmitted a dossier to the FBI detailing alleged money‑laundering links between businessman Neville Roy Singham and three U.S. news entities—The People’s Forum, BreakThrough News and Tricontinental—citing transactions exceeding $20 million. The file comes after the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee subpoenaed those entities for financial records, a request the entities have denied.
The move follows the ED’s challenge to a Delhi High Court order that, on May 29 2026, quashed the Delhi Police FIR and the ED’s money‑laundering investigation against the digital news portal NewsClick. The court remarked that the case was a “mala fide” attack on impartial journalism, noting the impact on press freedom.
In June 2026, the High Court struck down both the Delhi Police complaint and the ED’s ECIR, citing the proceedings as arbitrary and abusive. The ED has responded by filing a 1,000‑page petition before the Supreme Court, arguing that the High Court’s stay blocked its investigations for almost three years.
The petition cites a five‑month lag between the High Court’s reservation of order in December 2025 and its final judgment, and claims that the stay prevented the ED from completing its probe into Singham’s alleged $20 million network. The ED demands that the Supreme Court lift the stay and allow the money‑laundering case to resume.
The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for later this year. Its decision will determine whether the ED can proceed with its investigation and whether the Delhi High Court’s quashing of the case stands.
