Pittu, son of the school cook, lunged at assistant teacher Dipankar Das with a sharp knife during a Wednesday class at No. 2129 Bowalia Lower Primary School in Mankachar district. The blow left Das with severe lacerations and forced the class to halt abruptly.
The sudden violence sent a shockwave through the school; assistant teacher Begum Umme Habiba, terrified, locked herself in the washroom before fleeing to a nearby house where she called for help from neighboring schools. Her frantic calls spurred a rapid response from local teachers who rushed to the campus, escorting both Das and Habiba to the Gajarikandi Block Primary Health Centre.
Das was later transferred to the South Salmara-Mankachar District Hospital for advanced care, while Habiba, who lost consciousness from shock, remains under observation at the health centre. Both teachers are receiving treatment for physical injuries and psychological trauma.
School officials promptly notified Mankachar Police, who have begun a formal probe into the motive and circumstances of the attack. Investigators are canvassing security footage, interviewing staff, and collecting forensic evidence from the scene.
The incident has rattled parents and students across the district, who fear for their safety. The district education office has pledged to review security protocols and increase on‑site protection for staff and pupils.
Police are expected to file charges against Pittu within the next 48 hours, and a court hearing is slated for early next week.
