Barelal Adivasi, a 35‑year‑old farmer from Bijrawan village, filed a complaint with Shivpuri police on Thursday, alleging his wife Mithilesh refuses to observe Karwa Chauth, threatening divorce and claiming she intends to kill him.
Karwa Chauth, a religious fast observed by married Hindu women, involves a day of abstinence and moon worship to wish husbands a long life. The couple’s dispute highlights how entrenched customs can spark domestic conflict.
Sub‑Divisional Police Officer Sanjay Mishra said officers would intervene to resolve the rift, deploying a woman officer to mediate. Mishra added that the case will be registered under the local family‑law provisions.
Mithilesh, a 30‑year‑old mother of two, told a local woman officer she has no intention of fasting, citing personal autonomy over traditional expectations.
Police will file a case under the Karnataka Family Law and schedule a mediation session within 48 hours. The couple is expected to appear before a family court next week.
