The Aizawl rail link, inaugurated last September, has already lifted tourist arrivals in Mizoram, the state’s Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar told NDTV on Tuesday.
In a bid to capture the growing winter‑tourism market, Hmar unveiled a Rs 5 lakh grant scheme that will equip 199 families with the capital to convert homes into homestays.
The initiative reflects a shift toward community‑based tourism, allowing villagers to benefit directly rather than state‑run enterprises.
Hmar also announced that Mizoram will host a Christmas festival starting December 15, featuring carols, parades, and traditional feasts in both Aizawl and remote villages.
The minister said the state aims to position itself as an alternative to Goa, Pattaya and Bali for winter holidays, hoping the natural beauty and cultural authenticity will lure tourists.
If the homestay pilot succeeds, the government will roll it out statewide, and officials expect to see a surge in domestic and international visitors during the festive season.
