Dola Sen, the party’s general secretary, lodged a formal complaint at the Kalighat police station, accusing the 38‑year‑old of brandishing a knife and hurling abusive language as Banerjee stepped out at 6 p.m., a claim that the woman allegedly pretended to be Banerjee’s niece.
Police, however, described the incident as an "altercation" and said they apprehended the suspect, who the authorities later identified as Anusua Saha, a civic volunteer with a background in traffic management.
Saket Gokhale, the TMC spokesperson, posted on X, framing the episode as a drug‑addicted attack and hinting at a BJP‑backed conspiracy aimed at undermining Banerjee ahead of Delhi politics.
This is not the first time the former chief minister’s residence has been targeted; in August a stone was hurled at her car, while earlier this year her brother and other TMC members were assaulted in various districts.
The police have opened a criminal case under the Code of Criminal Procedure and are expected to file charges within the next 48 hours, while the TMC is demanding a full investigation into the alleged plot.
Residents of Kalighat report the area remains tense, with local volunteers on high alert after the incident.
