Manipur’s Chief Electoral Officer, following Election Commission guidance, has named 11 nodal officers to steer the state’s 2027 Assembly elections. The appointment notice, issued this week, lists officers from the Indian Police Service and the Indian Administrative Service, along with senior civil servants, to oversee security, finance, transport and cyber‑security.
Kamei Angam Romanus, a senior IPS officer, will manage law‑and‑order and security arrangements, while IAS officer Hungyo Worshang will tackle excise‑related tasks. Konsam Binku will monitor election expenditure, and Khumanthem Diana Devi will coordinate transport logistics. The remaining officers will handle computerisation, cybersecurity, communication, observer coordination and other operational aspects.
A team of senior Election Commission officials, arriving in Imphal last week, evaluated poll preparedness across the state’s 16 districts. They met district election officers and superintendents of police to review the arrangements being put in place.
Workshops on first‑level checking of electronic voting machines and voter‑verifiable paper audit trail units have also been conducted. Engineers from the Electronics Corporation of India Limited demonstrated the checking process and explained the technical and administrative safeguards used to verify the machines before deployment.
The 60‑member Manipur Legislative Assembly’s term ends on 13 March 2027, and the next election is slated for early 2027 after last year’s two‑phase polls on 28 February and 5 March 2022. The appointments aim to ensure a smooth, secure, and transparent election as polling day approaches.
Election officials will now proceed with full‑scale security drills and voter‑education campaigns leading up to the early 2027 polls.
