A blaze erupted at a shoe manufacturing unit in Phase 1 of Delhi’s Mangolpuri Industrial Area at around 9:30 pm on Friday, claiming four lives and leaving two workers wounded.
Firefighters rushed with 20 tenders, and police and paramedics arrived within minutes. Six people were rescued in a semi‑unconscious state and transported to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. The blaze, which began in the basement, was contained before it could spread to the upper floors.
Delhi Police’s DCP Outer District, Vikram Singh, said the factory owner has been summoned for questioning, and the contractor and workers are being interrogated to ascertain the number of labourers present.
The fire service confirmed that the fire was initially confined to the basement, and the rapid response prevented a larger structural collapse. Authorities are still probing the cause of the fire, with preliminary reports indicating heavy smoke and rapid spread through the staircase.
The fire has been fully extinguished and the cooling‑down process is underway. A formal investigation report will be released by the municipal authorities next week, and the factory owner may face legal action pending the findings.
