Constable Jeff Smith is fighting for his life, but the Belleville Police Service says he is making encouraging progress after sustaining grievous injuries during a Sunday evening exchange of gunfire. Deputy Chief Sheri Meeks confirmed the officer’s identity hours after the attack outside a local synagogue, where worshippers had gathered for Yom Kippur. The scene was chaotic. Meeks described a prolonged struggle, noting that Smith returned fire and was joined by another officer who also engaged the suspect.
The shooter, identified as 29-year-old Sean Ward, is in critical condition at Kingston General Hospital. Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), explained that Ward arrived in a black pickup truck just after 7 p.m. armed with a shotgun. He fired at Smith, who was already on the scene in an unmarked vehicle. Denette stated that Ward sustained “multiple strikes from the officer” and was clinically dead at one point before medical staff resuscitated him. Preliminary evidence suggests 20 to 30 gunshots were discharged, leaving dozens of bullet holes in the street and damaging nearby homes and vehicles.
The attack struck at the heart of the Jewish community’s most sacred day. Doug Weddum, president of the synagogue, told the National Post that the stained glass windows decorating the building were peppered with bullets. The violation of Yom Kippur’s sanctity prompted immediate political backlash. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was “disgusted” by the violence, vowing that all responsible parties would face prosecution to the full extent of the law. “My thoughts are with the Jewish community in Belleville and across Ontario, who have every right to gather and worship safely and without fear,” Ford wrote on social media.
Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed Ford’s sentiments, emphasizing that Jewish people must live free and open lives. “Canada’s government will do everything in our power to support law enforcement in ensuring that the perpetrator is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Carney stated. The SIU is now leading the investigation, with the focus shifting to Ward’s motive and the precise sequence of events that led to the deadly confrontation.
