Punjab Police busted a cross-border heroin smuggling ring that had been feeding the state’s drug problem, taking 7.8 kg of heroin into custody on a Wednesday in Pathankot.
The suspects, Gurpanth Singh of Vadala village in Amritsar Rural and Harmanjeet Kaur of Dhianpur, Gurdaspur, were linked to a 7.8 kg haul that includes 590 g seized from Gurpanth and 7.23 kg from a rented house in Fatehgarh Churian.
The raid came as part of the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign aimed at eradicating narcotics from Punjab, a strategy that has seen the state police conduct dozens of coordinated operations across the border.
'DGP Gaurav Yadav said the team used digital and technical analysis to map the wider network, noting that some packets bore Pakistani markings and that financial transactions point to deeper links.' 'SSP Manpreet Singh added that the intelligence that triggered the operation was credible, and that the recovered drugs are being processed for forensic evidence.'
Investigators are now tracing the financial trail and probing other potential accomplices, with a view to dismantling the supply chain. The police expect to arrest additional members in the coming weeks as data from the seized accounts is mined.
