A 46‑year‑old Pune businessman pretended to have an immigration problem at Mumbai International Airport to avoid revealing that he was traveling to Kuala Lumpur with a woman whose passport had been declared lost.
The airport officials discovered the passport was old and had been declared lost by its owner, prompting the businessman to cancel the trip and switch off his mobile phone before boarding.
He then boarded a train to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), accompanied by the woman, and called his wife from a landline to explain the need to surrender his phone, a claim he later denied.
When the woman’s phone became unreachable, the wife approached the police and lodged a kidnapping FIR, prompting the businessman to return to Sahar police station the night of the incident, where he confessed his deception.
A Sahar police station official said the case will be closed under a ‘C Summary’ once the investigation confirms a genuine mistake of fact, a classification used when an alleged crime is found to be neither entirely true nor false within two weeks.
