
The Turkish‑owned container ship MV Royad Mammadov, carrying corn from Izmail to Ravenna, was hit by an unidentified missile outside Romania’s territorial waters on Monday, October 6, resulting in the deaths of two foreign crew members and injuries to several others.
Three Indian seafarers—Sahil Sandhu, Ashwini Kumar and Harman Singh—survived the strike, were aided by Romanian rescue teams, and were later flown to Constanta where they received medical care.
The Indian embassy in Bucharest announced on Saturday that the three were safely on a flight back to India, thanking Romanian authorities and Constanta hospital for their support.
India supplies 311,936 maritime professionals worldwide, making it the second‑largest seafarer nation, according to the BIMCO‑ICS 2026 Seafarer Workforce Report.
The repatriated crew will arrive in New Delhi later this week, with the embassy ready to provide further assistance upon their arrival.
