Sonica, a 23‑year‑old student, posted on X that she and her roommate stepped out for a walk after dinner on Tuesday evening and returned to a paying‑guest hostel around 10:10 pm.
The encounter began when a Mahindra Scorpio pulled up beside them; a woman in her mid‑20s and a man aged roughly 45 approached, asking for directions and then probing personal questions about jobs and finances.
When the woman in the vehicle tried to move closer, the driver—who appeared visibly intoxicated—threatened them with a warning that she would do something if they stayed far away. The driver then offered two ₹500 notes as a “Diwali gift,” but the pair refused.
The situation escalated as the driver forced a ₹500 note into their pockets, demanded they stay in the car, and attempted to coerce them into eating from a nearby shop. Sonica, fearing for her safety, opened the car door, pretended to take a call, and fled to a nearby shop, calling a friend for help.
Gurugram Police have opened a criminal case, taken statements from the two women, and are analyzing CCTV footage from the market lanes. Residents in the area have reported increased anxiety, and the police have urged vigilance during late‑night outings.
