Arjun Ram Meghwal posted on Monday that three former chief justices had been elevated to the Supreme Court. Justice Sunita Agarwal, former Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya of Delhi High Court, and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh from Telangana High Court now sit as judges of the apex court.
The Collegium had recommended the appointments on September 28—after a thorough vetting process. The Supreme Court’s working strength was 34; with the new appointees it climbs to 37, still one seat shy of the sanctioned 38.
The sanctioned strength was increased from 34 to 38 by the Supreme Court Amendment Act 2026, a move aimed at easing the backlog of cases. The new judges will bring fresh perspectives to the bench.
Once the three appointees take oath, the effective strength will rise to 37. The Supreme Court will then be better positioned to handle its docket, with an expanded capacity to hear more cases.
