Rajeev Chandrasekhar told NDTV that India must tighten AI oversight, warning that unchecked advances could weaponise misinformation.
He cited Anthropic’s 154‑page report on nine months of AI misuse, which critics say shows regulators lag behind tech giants.
Chandrasekhar argued that innovation and regulation can coexist, insisting that the centre is about allowing progress while building safeguards.
He pointed to 2021 Information Technology Rules as a starting point, but said they must be expanded to cover AI layers that can automagically create disinformation.
The ministry is already convening experts to draft a national AI governance framework, slated for release by early 2027.
