The oath ceremony, held in the court’s main chambers, saw the bench swell from 43 to 50 judges, an increase of seven that lifts the court toward its sanctioned strength of 60.
Chief Justice Upadhyaya administered the oath to Justices Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj. The two permanent appointees took the oath in English, while the five additional judges recited it in Hindi.
Saxena and Sharma had been principal district and sessions judges at Rohini and Karkardooma, respectively, while Bhatt had served at the Rouse Avenue Court. Parashar had been the Supreme Court’s secretary‑general, and Bhardwaj had acted as Registrar‑General of the Delhi High Court.
The central government announced the appointments on September 19 after the Supreme Court collegium recommended the seven officers. The move is expected to ease the court’s heavy docket and accelerate the resolution of over 20,000 pending cases.
With 50 judges now on the bench, the court is positioned to schedule additional hearings, a step that will likely reduce the average wait time for litigants in the capital’s most crowded jurisdiction.
