H K Patil, a senior Congress MLA from Karnataka, has vowed to resign as a legislator if Gadag taluk is not declared drought‑hit by October 10.
Patil told the crowd he would push for the declaration before the Gandhi Jayanti holiday on October 2, insisting he would use every channel to secure it within three days.
So far, 124 taluks across Karnataka have already been declared drought‑hit. The first assessment phase covered 101 taluks, a second phase added 24 more, and 52 are expected to be added in the next three to four days, while 50 will undergo ground‑truthing before a final decision.
Farmers in Gadag have endured prolonged water shortages, citing the lack of irrigation infrastructure as the main cause of crop failure.
Patil warned that he would submit his resignation to the Karnataka Assembly if the government blocks the declaration, a move that could trigger a political backlash.
