Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on October 13 2026, agreeing to deepen India‑Canada ties across trade, energy, technology, security and people‑to‑people links.
The call followed senior Canadian diplomat David Morrison’s October 5‑7 visit, during which he met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Delhi to outline a shared strategy against transnational crime, terrorism, drug trafficking and cyber‑crime.
Those talks were part of an ongoing NSA‑level security dialogue that began in September 2025 and resumed in Ottawa in February 2026.
Relations had been strained in 2023 after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of a link to the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a claim India dismissed as ‘absurd’ and later led to the recall of New Delhi’s high commissioner and five diplomats.
With Carney’s April parliamentary win, the two countries have since reopened high commission offices and are now set to translate their pledges into concrete outcomes, with joint task‑forces slated to draft actionable plans in trade, energy, tech and security.
