Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah arrived at the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, on Saturday to honor Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on the 151st anniversary of his birth.
Modi placed a wreath of marigolds at the statue and tweeted: "Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the pioneer of 'Akhand Bharat' and the Iron Man of the country, dedicated his life to building a strong, prosperous India." The post highlighted Patel’s role in unifying over 560 princely states and praised his commitment to national integration.
Shah’s message on X described Patel as "the architect of modern India, the symbol of national unity and integrity," recalling his leadership in the Kheda and Bardoli Satyagrahas that secured farmers’ rights. He added that Patel’s establishment of the All India Services laid a robust foundation for the country’s administration.
October 31, the day on which Patel was born in Nadiad, has been celebrated as National Unity Day since 2014 to reaffirm India’s resolve to preserve its unity, integrity and security. The day also marks the anniversary of the nation’s first Home Minister’s efforts to bring fragmented princely states together.
Both leaders concluded that Patel’s sacrifice and devotion continue to inspire the nation toward building a developed, self‑reliant India. A week‑long series of commemorative events will follow across the country to honor his legacy.
