According to Arora, who cited data from Sangrur SSP Ravjot Grewal, Jagga had nine FIRs registered against him. These included serious charges under the NDPS Act, excise-related offenses, and a rape case. Four of those cases resulted in convictions, while four remain under trial. The minister argued that painting a convicted criminal as a victim of state oppression is a deliberate political maneuver.
The timeline of the incident adds layers to this dispute. Jagga allegedly consumed a poisonous substance outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Sangrur after raising grievances about drug sales in his village. He was rushed to Sangrur Civil Hospital and later transferred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala in a serious condition. Before the incident, Jagga had posted a video on September 12 threatening to take his own life if action wasn't taken in his case, prompting police to register a DDR under Section 226 of the BNS and alert the area magistrate.
Police investigations suggest the tragedy may be rooted in local disputes rather than broad systemic corruption. SSP Grewal noted that village panchayats were actively trying to curb drug sales in Namol village. She stated that the panchayat alleged Jagga was being politically provoked and was naming the entire local body due to a dispute connected to the alleged drug trade. The preliminary inquiry is ongoing, with police focusing on the claims of political provocation and the victim's prior criminal record.
Arora has called on the opposition to drop the "low-level" rhetoric and apologize to the people.
