The 50:50 joint venture between Pirelli and BKT is set to start producing passenger‑car radial tyres right here in India, with the first plant expected at BKT’s Bhuj site—no small move for a company that’s been a heavy‑duty tyre mainstay for decades.
BKT, long a specialist in off‑highway tyres, brings massive manufacturing capacity and a focus on durability. Pirelli, meanwhile, has a storied motorsport heritage and is known for on‑road performance. The two firms say their shared long‑term outlook—rather than chasing quick wins—makes the partnership a natural fit.
Under a separate offtake agreement, BKT will churn out Pirelli‑branded tyres, while Pirelli will supply technical support and testing for BKT’s own passenger, SUV and two‑wheelers. This dual‑channel approach means Indian customers could see a full line‑up from a single plant, potentially cutting costs and speeding delivery.
India’s tyre market is shifting toward higher‑value products as the passenger‑car fleet grows. Pirelli’s chief, Marco Tronchetti Provera, said the country is becoming a key part of its international strategy. The joint venture aligns with that vision, giving both firms a stake in a market that increasingly demands advanced tread compounds and better fuel efficiency.
The venture was inked on October 22, with a framework agreement and a 50:50 ownership split. Pirelli will invest in the new plant, while BKT’s existing infrastructure will be leveraged. If all goes as planned, the first batch of tyres could hit the market by late 2027, with city‑wide availability rolling out across major hubs like Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru.
Buyers watching this space should keep an eye on the rollout timeline and the pricing strategy. If the collaboration delivers on its promise of quality and affordability, it could shift the competitive balance in India’s passenger‑car tyre segment, pushing rivals to innovate or cut prices.
