The festive season is usually a guessing game, but Maruti Suzuki just handed dealers a clear signal: SUVs are the new engine of growth. Between Ganesh Chaturthi and Dussehra, retail sales jumped 35%. Small cars, the traditional bread and butter of the brand, grew a modest 16%. But the real story was the doubling of SUV retail numbers. For a buyer deciding between a Swift and a Brezza or Baleno, the demand data suggests the market is shifting decisively toward higher ground.
The backlog is telling. Pending bookings climbed from roughly 2 lakh units at the start of October to 2.7 lakh by Dussehra. That’s an addition of 70,000 vehicles in a few weeks. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer at Maruti Suzuki, noted that while Navratri-specific sales were flat compared to last year, the broader festive window showed strong momentum. The company is now pushing to maximize deliveries before Diwali, aiming for double-digit growth for the entire festive period.
Context matters here. FADA’s provisional data shows passenger vehicle registrations hit 1,82,728 units during Navratri 2026, up 10.39% from 2024 but down 21.91% from the 11-day Navratri in 2025. Maruti’s outperformance in the SUV segment suggests it’s capturing share from rivals like Hyundai and Kia in the compact SUV space. For the average buyer, this means more options and potentially tighter delivery windows for popular SUV trims, while small car buyers might still find immediate availability.
The takeaway for prospective buyers is straightforward: if you’re eyeing a Maruti SUV, the demand spike could mean longer wait times post-Diwali. The company’s 2.7 lakh unit backlog is a buffer, but it also indicates a hot market. With double-digit growth anticipated through Diwali, now is a good time to negotiate, as dealers are likely eager to clear inventory before the holiday rush peaks.
