The remote Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior yielded a dramatic rescue when a 70‑year‑old hiker, Craig Berg, was found hypothermic on September 12.
Bérg was expected to return on September 5 but missed the scheduled ferry from the mainland, prompting his family to report him missing the next day.
The search, involving Michigan State Police K‑9 teams, the National Park Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, and state agencies from Wisconsin and Minnesota, covered the island's rugged 45‑mile‑long terrain for seven days.
Backpackers on a separate trek discovered Berg in a shallow ravine, alert and conscious, and immediately called for help, allowing rescuers to arrive swiftly.
A Coast Guard MH‑60 Jayhawk from Air Station Traverse City hoisted him aboard and transported him to Marquette Regional Airport, where emergency medical personnel transferred him to Marquette Regional Hospital for further treatment.
